Thelonius is so great. I once heard a story on a documentary about him, where he was in a club playing, and he noticed that everyone was talking and not paying attention. He started playing softer and softer until his hands were moving over the keys, but not touching them. The club owner became enraged and threw him out into the street.
I would always include Shirley Horn on any list, and Chet Baker would have to be considered too.
